Power Converters/Adapters in China

For my first homework topic, I researched power converters/adapters to use while in China. The first thing you need to know is that China’s power outlets use 220V electric outputs while the United States’ power outlets use 110V. Also, the power outlets are shaped differently. Because of this, the devices we bring will require a power adapter or converter.

The second, and most important, thing to know is whether your device is considered an electronic, like a computer, digital camera, or cell phone charger, or an electronic device, like a hair dryer, straightener, or a shaver. The difference lies in the input voltage that the device will accept. Electronics, for example your computer, typically has an AC adapter that accepts ranges from ~100V to 240V. For these types of devices, all you will need is a wall plug adapter. These wall adapters are sold in most general electronics stores, such as Wal-mart or RadioShack, for around $10-14, but you can get them cheaper on Amazon and they ship in just a few days.

For electronic devices, however, a power converter will be needed, as these devices typically do not have built in converters and only accept 110V. This means that if you plug it in with only an adapter, your hair dryer or straightener will likely become a ball of fire. Most knowledgeable travelers advise just leaving electronic devices at home, as they aren’t worth the trouble. Power converters also cost more, generally around $21. Again, you could most likely find this cheaper on Amazon and have it shipped quickly.
