12 projects at the “Time – Space – Existence” during the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale

The exhibition presents a group of projects by leading international designers using emerging and novel forms of reading and producing spatial conditions that connect/visualize data, responsive systems, and sensing/actuation technologies, through micro and macro scales. The exhibition takes the opportunity to exhibit a range of projects, side by side, that transform DATA as an abstraction into spatial and experiential configurations. It aims at triggering discussion and debate on how the use of data in design methodologies and theoretical discourses have evolved in the last two decades and why processes of data measurement, quantification, simulation, ubiquitous technologies and algorithmic control, and their integration into methods of making architectural form and spatial experiences, are becoming vital in academic and industry practices.

ACADIA 2017 exhibition, publication, and presentation

Ming Tang and Mara Marcu’s project “Augmented Coral” is exhibited at t he Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) 2017 Conference at MIT. Boston, MA.  Nov.2-4. 2017. The project is also published in the In Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) 2017 Conference proceeding. Mara Marcu presented the project at the ACADIA 2017 project seminar, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA on Nov 1st. 2017.  You can check out the exhibition pictures here. Augmented Reality in SOFA Expo

sofa

Ming Tang and Mara Marcu coordinated the gallery exhibition in SOFA Expo Chicago. ( Sculpture Object and Functional Art and Design). The exhibition featured works from faculty and students from School of Art, School of Architecture & Interior Design. Exhibition Hall. Navy Pier, Chicago. Nov2-6. 2016.

The installation has three components. Smaller artifacts expand on the notion of architectural structure and collectively create a catalogue of “misbehaved” tectonics. Larger ceramic and polypropylene prototypes speculate on the role of architectural pleats and on the metamorphosis of two dimensional material to three dimensional form. Several hologram digital models created onsite obsess over the possibility of endless variation through human interaction, the natural versus the artificial, and“ the-everything-else” that lies in between.

Check out the slide show here.

end of semester VR show at DAAP UC

We demonstrated how the virtual reality can be used to visualize the studio project during the “end of semester show” at UC DAAP. Five student projects were compiled with Unity Game Engine to construct a virtual urban square. Users can use mouse, keyboard and Oculus Rift DK2 to interact with the model.

Thanks Jay Schairbaum , Jonah Pruitt, Anna Kick, Gabriel Berning, and Dongrui Zhu share their studio model. Thanks Michael Rogovin to assist the Unity coding.
