Through the entire visualization courses in the three semesters, it significantly enriched my blank background of visualization technique in architectural curriculums. From basic modeling in rhino, 3ds max and maya to advanced parametric design in these programs, these courses really helped us to achieve free-formed modeling skills. And also these 3d modeling software can help us to simulate the real situation and environment and generate the form according to these calculations. Computer graphic technology has already exceeded the traditional architectural process and become the one of indispensable technique around this industry. This kind of new trend helps architects rethink how to create the space though this complicated process. And virtual reality rendering in these programs also increased the quality of presenting the real space material and feeling. This rendering effect is divided into two different parts. One of these tends to be the final products. For instance, v-ray and mental ray rendering mainly focus on photorealistic results with their plenty of material libraries and different channels to adjust various effects. But this process for generating a good quality image will take a long time and be needed to test it several times. You cannot realize the actual space during this time and most of the results just show in a picture. Another type of rendering technique is real-time visualization, such as Autodesk showcase, augment reality and web 3d which is a game rendering engine. This kind of rendering style can drastically improve clients’ experience during this presentation and help them to thoroughly understand the design and changing process in their project. So I will list these three different real-time renderings’ advantage and disadvantage through my experience when I used it.

Autodesk showcase’s interface is friendly and easily for customer using. The preset environment and material library can be quickly set up and give you a realistic 3d model. And all of the user-friendly menu can be explored by yourself. The animation function in showcase is pretty powerful to preset a complex model through different angle and position. This clear illustration for presentation can be divided in to several snapshot and you can decide which part you want to include in your final video.  The real-time environment also can enhance the quality of testing cast shadow in different time period. For the final video production, showcase also give us plenty of formats suitable to different devices. Although this excellent product is really helpful in real-time visualization, it still has some parts needed to upgrade. For example, the material library is not powerful comparing with v-ray or mental ray rendering. Another issue is that some of the preset environments cannot match with your model. Although you can scale the whole environment, some of the individual parts like buildings and trees are also scaled when you change it. That leads to an uncomfortable experience when you show it to clients.

The augment reality which is my favorite rendering programs provides multiple ways to illustrate the model. The best point for augment rendering is that it creates an ideal method to interact the model with clients through different media such as apple products. This excellent idea provides a more convenient way to share your model in different situations. For instance, people can explore the model whenever they want by just using your iPhone or iPad. You even can get a tracker for matching the physical model with your digital parts. It is really an innovative process for easy-handling and portable design. But this great mode also has it shortage during my studying experience. It cannot handle the really complex geometry when you want to show the material and color in augment. Because of the baking process in maya, it just can bake relatively complex geometry to jpeg file otherwise the program will mass up with really complicated one. So all I need is to simplify my building façade and make the model as clear as possible. I think in the future this tricky part can be solved and give more flexible ability for architectural visualization.

The last one is a game engine for live rendering 3dweb. This program is more simplified and quick-using. Also the realistic quality material can be easily assigned to your model. After assigning the material, there are also lots of channels that you can adjust by loading a new image or change the parameter. The web 3d also provides many different presentation mode such as wireframe, smooth, X-ray and so on. It largely improves the clients’ sense for understanding the model thoroughly by changing different mode. Like wireframe is a best way to show the structure in building process. Still for this program you need to reduce your 3d model file to upload in their website. And this game engine based program also cannot give realistic environment function to cast the soft shadows.

For all of the experiences I learnt from these virtual reality visualization, I realized that these real-time rendering techniques can be perfectly engaged into your design process and show the clients efficiently by setting up your concept model without any impractical imagination. It is also a short cut for check your design by yourself or for group discussion. Architectural visualization has already occupied the major industry from 2d rendering to 3d real-time rendering. In the future this trend will be applied to broader field such as building construction industry, surgery process analysis etc. and also some other wearable devices can help customers and constructors to engage into this situation and understand the more complex space or structures. Some large projection device also can provide a real scale 3d model in the city to test the possibility in this urban environment and people’s feeling. That will be the economical method to achieve it.

For the future’s architectural visualization development, I do believe that this innovative mothed will be more convenient, realistic and adaptable for any devices.  During these three visualization courses, I have enriched my architectural skills and visualized technique. I believe this foundation year gave me more confident to achieve this career and renew my concept to think about design in plenty of ways.
