This course investigates the design pipeline and platform that is focused on the making of form through drawings, scaled models, digital constructions and materially. Drawing representation (immaterial process) and fabrication (material process) are introduced as hybrid activities. Students will engage in a non-linear work pipeline that produce drawings both analogy and digitally, as well as explored the process of design with a focus on representing materiality.

Today, powerful modeling and rendering software allows us to directly manipulate digital images, and create complex forms and photorealistic renderings without thinking of how to realize it in the physical world.  Realizing the importance of materiality and tangible form provokes a question that is vital to the field of design. The objective of this course is two-folded.

First, the course closely examines the language of architectural form and covers a wide range of techniques for analyzing and representing it, including freehand sketching, drafting, painting and different means of rendering. It approaches drawing as a tool for thinking as well as for representation.  It is a comprehensive look at representation techniques (digital and analog) and methodologies as they influence the design process.

Second, this course discusses the distinction between developing  representation and the act of making itself.  Representation such as sketch, rendering, and construction drawing are just the representation of the actual form, where valuable information is stored or released within each of the drawings. However, realizing the building information in the physical world develops new situations where information is not longer just represented but now processed through various pipelines that all differ from each other.  the course discusses the necessity of expanding from the representation skills to incorporate craftsmanship and digital craft. In our approach, the consideration of fabrication and assembling process creates a feedback loop to the drawing. The results are valued for the process of making, and integration of fabrication/material parameters, and the engagement to the tangible world.

Course Goals:

Students enhance their observational and representational skills. They also learn basic ordering principles of design and how to analyze a design by diagramming. Students should also be able to use sketching as a tool in the search for design solutions. Skills acquired in  drawing are further utilized in the development of more advanced compositions. The students increase their understanding of the basic ordering principles of design and develop an understanding of the interrelationship of form, space, human function, and environmental context. Students develop an ability to make simple design judgments and synthesize the process of conceptualization with the results of the analyses and the spatial/formal considerations into form designs. Students become more familiar with very basic technological components of architecture. Students also refine their ability to represent their design solutions both graphically and verbally.

  • Be able to identify theories and principles of representation, communication, and information technology, and apply them to design
  • The development of freehand drawing skills to visualize, analyze, and synthesize
  • The ability to use “design drawing” as a means of generating ideas and concepts
  • The fostering of visual communication as an important tool for describing and understanding of complex, interrelated problems
  • To be able to communicate a building form through the inscribing three dimensional space into two dimensional abstractions.
  • To be able to understand the design process as a discovery of connections between techniques and methodologies.
  • To be able to use sketching and drafting as a tool for documentation as well as a generator in the process of design.
  • To apply 3D digital modeling and rendering technique in the entire design process. Understand the techniques of architectural visualization related with image, animation, and real-time rendering.
  • To integrate digital fabrication with hand crafted physical modeling.
  • To be able to understand various principles of Composition and Presentation, including color system, contrast, aggregation and alignment to create a hybrid drawing.
  • This course is integrated with the Design Studio by providing students the option of incorporating the designs of past or present studio project as this course’s final project.

Course Outcomes: The following course outcomes indicate competencies and measurable skills that students develop as a result of completing this course:

  • Student will understand basic conventions of graphics, including but not limited to : the use of construction lines, elevation and plan projection, and perspective.
  • Student will demonstrate building Form and Space Communication through hand drawing.
  • Student will demonstrate conventional architectural representations such as plans and elevations.
  • Student will demonstrate optimizing thinking and workflow while exploring various software applications.
  • Student will demonstrate techniques of making digital form and realize it as a physical model.
  • Student will demonstrate hybrid collage techniques with both analog and digital media.
  • Student will demonstrate the technique of selecting, dissecting and combining graphic elements .
