UC Gateway 2020, at the north end of McMicken Commons, is positioned to highlight the campus mainstreet while welcoming commuters and pedestrians to the campus. Intended to stand alone rather than fit in with the preexisting harmony of the campus master plan, the structure erupts from the grassy mound, lofting high above the primary artery of campus before its steep titanium walls plunge into the surrounding terrain. Indeed, through a unique form and a flexible program, the Gateway serves as a dynamic entrance to the campus, while simultaneously providing a physical link between bicycle commuters and pedestrians, as the structure contains within itself the necessary facilities for commuting throughout the year.
