Project 1. Drew Suszko & James Bayless

The site for our landscape sculpture is the intersection of East Mehring and Joe Nuxhall Way in downtown Cincinnati, along the Ohio River.  Our team believed that this open site could benefit from a large-scale shade sculpture.

In our design we sought to respond to the inherent movement of the site – an interconnected, organic shape that flows from high elevation to low.  At the same time, we thought the sculpture should frame the views on either side of the river.  We began with a surface that paralleled the shape of the site, and proceeded to divide the form into several “ribbons” – the ends of which support the structure.  After a series of bending and folding transformations, we arrived at the final model.
