Le Boxel is a project designed and constructed by students at the University of Applied Sciences in Detmold, Germany. Empty beer boxes are used to create an open air pavilion which can be used for concerts and other campus events.

Because of the unusual nature of the material meant that computer software was key both in preparing for fabrication and structural analysis. The students used FEM software to test the structure before it was built to test its feasibility. Computer models also let students know the exact location of each box in the pavilion prior to construction, which lasted only one week.

Slats and screws were used to connect the boxes together and specific boxes were filled with concrete at anchor points to create a flexible structure, able to resist shear and bending forces and to transfer loads into the ground. The connections were invisible and each box appears to “float” in space, defying gravity.
